Young environmentalist recognized at ASEAN Festival for pioneering efforts in marine conservation and promoting sustainable fashion.
At the ASEAN Festival held at Gembox Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, Joe Chew Thong Yao was honored in the Environmental & Social Responsibility category for his trailblazing contributions to ocean conservation and sustainable fashion. Joe is celebrated as theFirst Malaysian Youth to Hold Dual Roles as Global Teen Ocean Ambassador and Sustainable Fashion Ocean Ambassador, Active in Ocean Conservation Since Age 8.
“Leading by Example: Advocating for Oceans and Sustainability”
Joe’s passion for ocean conservation has seen him undertake numerous impactful initiatives. As the founder of the Ocean Motion club, he spearheaded the I Promise The Ocean campaign to educate communities about marine issues. His innovation extends to the intersection of fashion and sustainability, as demonstrated by his Eye Sea You Coral Sneakers, a winning design in the ME2WE Fashion Design contest, which highlights the importance of sustainable materials.
Joe’s creative approach to environmental advocacy also earned him recognition at the YEX Factor competition, where he emphasized the critical connection between fashion and marine conservation. His dual ambassadorship showcases his ability to merge environmental responsibility with the growing global focus on sustainable practices.
Speaking about his journey, Joe said, “Our oceans are the lifeblood of our planet, and it is our responsibility to protect them. Through conservation efforts and sustainable fashion, I hope to inspire my generation to take bold action for a healthier, more sustainable future.”
